I feel GOOD that I urged you all to hold off on the February 9 Security Updates.
The FIRESTORM has started today — albeit mainly on XP systems. Here is a good article on the problem, published today, by ComputerWorld.
This is not funny, especially coming just three weeks after the great KB977074 fiasco. I have said it once, I will say it again. Congress needs to look into Microsoft.
Here is the link to Microsoft’s forum JUST on problems with this update.
Again, most people are reporting problems on XP … and PLEASE note that Microsoft currently doesn’t have a workaround for this … other than booting off the original XP install disk.
Not good.
HOLD OFF. Though we are not hearing much on the Windows 7 front, if it clobbers XP this badly … it could blow us out of the water TOO.
I will keep you posted.
Good luck. We need it.
Cheers

Hello,
I came across your website while googling KB978262. I just installed Windows 7 and received a bunch of Windows Updates available for me to download and install. Having come from Vista, I wanted to research each one to see if I should download and install first. The very first one I looked up, KB978262, brought up your site and the warning message about it that you posted. I also have the other one you referenced in my list of updates.
Do you know which, if any of the ones below, are harmful to me to install I figured it was worth a shot at writing to you as, without your site, I might have installed KN978262 on my new Windows 7 Toshiba.
The updates I have listed are:

Jason,
KB978262 appears to be MORE of a problem for XP users than those on Win 7.
I have KB978262 installed on Win7 (and on XP). Installed it on Win 7, without incident, on 2/13.

In reality, I have ALL the Windows 7 updates, bar the OPTIONAL KB971033 WAT check, installed! Not installing KB971033 since it is OPTIONAL and I don’t trust MSFT. Never have.
I checked updates 3 hours ago. Had a Windows Defender update. INSTALLED that too. So I have NOTHING outstanding.
I have been lucky. Plus this is a legit Win 7 Professional, clean installed, from DVD … on a brand new systems
So … what can I say. I have installed them ALL.
But let me know? Can YOU please post this email as a COMMENT. It would help others. I will put in this answer. My goal is to help each other.
ALL THE BEST. Keep your toes crossed. Cheers Anu
Thank you so much for the response! I will do just that and will certainly be following your blog from now on as well.
