My production XP box that had performed FLAWLESSLY for 6.5 years started acting up three days ago! It is as if it was sulking that I wasn’t using it all the time. So, I had no choice but to switch over to the Windows 7 ‘test’ rig for my production work, while Mike (of LRPCS) and I tried to work out what was ailing the XP other than ‘Win7 envy.’ Since the graphics card was running hot Mike too
k it out. So the XP box was back to just having the VGA port off its Intel motherboard.
This meant I had to hook up my now ‘spare’ DVI monitor to the second port of my Asus GTX260 card. Mike, the hardware whiz, did that all. Came up first time. That was easy. But the desktop kept on coming up on the left hand monitor — which was my OLD one. We thought it was selecting that by port. Switched cables. Nope. It was the Window 7 software. The DUAL MONITOR set up appears little changed from XP.
Mike, found the ‘magic’ radio button — the one that says ‘Make This Your Main Display.’ Bingo. That and having ‘Extend These Displays’ gave me exactly what I wanted … and had had for over eight years on my XP.
(I met my wife because I had a dual monitor rig in 2002. I was teaching those days and one night had to grade Excel spreadsheets! That can be tedious. So while having Excel on one monitor I fired up Yahoo IM on the other monitor. I met my now wife on that IM. Six weeks, to the day, on January 1, 2003, we got married. If not for the dual monitors I would not have met my wife!)
With the way I set it up the task bar and desktop icons are all on my RIGHT hand monitor. There is no task bar or system tray on the left monitor. (Yes, I can manually move desktop icons across to the left monitor, but I don’t.) I just use the left hand monitor to have additional windows open. I invariably run two instances of FireFox with a minimum of six tabs each. Sometimes more. I can have as many as 20 tabs across the two FireFoxes — one on each monitor. Then, if I am writing, I will also have Word and in many cases Excel open. I keep all my papal data in Excel spreadsheets. Often, I will have multiple instances of Word and Excel too. So I need the real estate.
But this is to just record that dual-monitor worked on Windows 7 without us having to jump through hoops.
Hope this helps.
