I see that quite a few people continue to have problems with USB hubs on Windows 7 … akin to what I described way back on November 24, 2009.
I haven’t had a chance to do too much research into this, and I don’t have a hub on my Windows 7 rig … given that I have two unused USB ports, right up on top … within arms reach.
But, from what I have managed to gleam the Windows 7 problem appears to be with the ‘new’ Power Management criteria.
So this what I think you have to do:
- Either get a powered hub, or
- Once the USB hub is connected, go to the device manager, find the port, RIGHT CLICK to get PROPERTIES and then find the ‘Power Management’ tab (as above). Turn-off the ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ option.
As with the padlocks on icons issue, it appears that folks have had problems with USB hubs and Window 7 from the get-go … way back last April! So, I am confounded as to why Microsoft, Belkin etc. are playing DUMB on this. I get at least 5 hits a day on this blog of people searching ‘Windows 7 USB hubs.’ Do a Google. There are pages and pages … as with the padlock on icons.
This is why folks despair of PCs and Microsoft. If the problem is known and there is a fix … why play COY?

Thanks for writing about this. There’s a bunch of important tech info on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your web site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs reasonably up-to-date, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a great job with this one. How do you do it?
Thanks!
This really helped me.
